Miramare is the Italian form of the original Miramar, derived from Spanish "mirar el mar", as Maximilian of Habsburg visiting the promontory that hosts it, was inspired by the memory of Spanish castles overlooking the Atlantic Ocean coasts.
The castle is surrounded by a large park of about 22 hectares, characterized by a large variety of plants, many of which were chosen by the Archduke himself during his journeys around the world, who served as Admiral of the Austrian Navy.
In the park is also the castelletto, a smaller building that used to be the residence for the two spouses during the construction of the castle itself but which became a prison for Carlotta when he lost the reason after killing his husband in Mexico. The Castle of Miramare "still presents the original furnishings of the era, a testimony to the history of the noble owners, the archduke and wife Carlotta of Saxony, daughter of the king of Belgium, and their sad fate that did not allow him to enjoy the splendid mansion".
Inside, the castle is divided into several rooms. The ground floor was intended for the residence of Emperor Massimiliano I and his wife Carlotta, while the upper one was later used as the residence of Duke Amedeo d'Aosta, who lived there for about seven years and modified some rooms according to the style of ' era.
The Imperial-Regie signs were removed and replaced with Savoy crosses.
This castle was bad for those who lived there: Massimiliano of Habsburg departed to cradle the imperial crown of Mexico and died, Amedeo left for the Ethiopian Empire he was viceroy and died in prison.
