Risiera of San Sabba

The Risiera of San Sabba is the only example of Nazi lager in Italy. It is located at Valmaura at the exit (indication Servola-Valmaura) of the freeway.
It has been a national monument since 1965. The Nazi occupiers, from September 1943 to April 1945, used the large complex of rice mill plantations, built in 1913 in the S. Sabba district (now embedded in the Valmaura district) , First as a temporary prison camp and then as a Polizeihaftlager (Police Detention Area).

In the risiera were suppressed and burned between the three and the five thousand people - the Friars, Slovenes, Croats, Friulians, Istrians and Jews - the number of prisoners-detainees, partisans, political prisoners and Jewish-smuggled to other extermination camps Or forced labor. After being half-buried by the fleeing Nazis, occupied post-war by allied troops, used as a refugee camp, and finally left behind, was restored by the Roman architect Boico and inaugurated in 1975.

The cell of death and the 17 cells of detention remained unaltered. There is space for a permanent photo exhibition and a library.
